The city of Portland has been presented with the "ITS America Smart City Award" in recognition of its deployment of ITS to address congestion, traffic safety and environmental problems. The award was presented to Susan Keil, director of the Portland Bureau of Transportation, and Peter Koonce, division manager of signals and street lighting, by ITS America president and CEO Scott Belcher during this week's Women's Transportation Seminar/ITS Oregon luncheon in Portland.

The four-state ITS Midwest chapter held its 2009 Annual Meeting on October 7-8, 2009 at the Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts. Theme of the meeting was "ITS Big, and ITS Special (A meeting focusing on ITS and traffic management strategies for large-scale special events)."

The Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America), ERTICO-ITS Europe, and ITS Japan will host more than 10,000 of the world's leading transportation policy makers, technology, and business professionals in Orlando, Florida from October 16-20, 2011 for the 18th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems. The conference organizers are planning to feature a live outdoor demonstration of ITS technologies.
In order to facilitate planning efforts, interested organizations are asked to submit a pre-application and participate in a planning meeting in January 2010. Deadline for the pre-application is January 11, 2010 (5 p.m. EDT).

Don't forget to submit the nominations for the 2009 "Project of the Year Award": the deadline for submitting registrations is Thursday Sep. 8, 2009 .
The Project of the Year Award is presented to a project that highlights a major accomplishment our public or private sector members have made over the past year. Any ITS Midwest member may nominate projects that took place in one of the four States of the ITS Midwest Chapter, including projects from his or her own organization. This workshop and webinar is a unique learning opportunity offered by the Transportation Safety Advancement Group (TSAG) and the ITS Professional Capacity Building Program's Talking Technology & Transportation (T3) Program at the ITS Joint Program Office, U.S. DOT. The workshop will be presented to a live audience at the workshop location as well as to remote T3 webinar participants. T3 participants are invited to submit written questions before the Webinar as well as during workshop question and answer periods.

* Talking Freight Webinar -- "TIGER Discretionary Grants Program", June 9, 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM Eastern Time:
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 appropriated $1.5 billion of discretionary grant funds (TIGER Discretionary Grants) for capital investments in surface transportation infrastructure to be awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation. These TIGER Discretionary Grants are to be awarded on a competitive basis to projects that have a significant impact on the Nation, a metropolitan area, or a region. Join Tony Furst from FHWA's Office of Freight Management and Operations and Jake Falk from USDOT's Office of the Secretary as they discuss the program, selection criteria, evaluations, and application process. (Complete applications for TIGER Discretionary Grants must be submitted by September 15, 2009).

This webinar will address the rationale for work zone performance monitoring and discuss some specific measures, data, and methods that can be used to monitor work zone performance. Speakers will share examples and lessons learned from a pilot test of performance monitoring at five work zones and from several years of experience collecting and analyzing data at a State DOT.
