EXPERIENCE ITS… at the 12th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems. Set in San Francisco November 6 – 10, 2005, the event is packed with new features, many professional development opportunities, and hands-on activities.

The 2005 theme “Enabling Choices in Transportation” communicates the emphasis on the end-user in transportation. Electronic Payment Systems Workshop
October 24-25, 2005 POSTPONED UNTIL EARLY 2006

A workshop on regional Electronic Payment Systems (EPS) deployment is being convened in Chicago, Illinois on October 24-25, 2005 (Postponed until early 2006). The event will be held at the Doubletree Guest Suites, 198 East Delaware Place, Chicago, Illinois.

This workshop is a must for transportation specialists deploying or considering the deployment of integrated electronic payment systems.

Primary purpose of this workshop is to examine the local progress and explore EPS integration challenges. This workshop will examine current activities in the transportation arena -- toll collection, transit, and parking arena as well as other related sectors such as banking and merchandizing. Attendees will explore various approaches to build local interest and support for EPS programs including marketing initiatives and local press involvement.

Speakers from EPS deployments in the Midwest region will be joined with leaders from national and international deployments to share their experiences and challenges in initiating and making EPS work in their regions. Presentations will include project experience in Orlando, Washington, DC, San Francisco and London, England; activities of Federal Reserve Bank, MasterCard, and Exxon Mobile; and local efforts by CTA, Pace and Illinois Tollway. A featured speaker will be James Reilly, Chairman of the Chicago Regional Transportation Authority. Other segments will include discussion on how electronic payment systems fit within a regional architecture and the future impact that the federal Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) initiative will have on electronic payment systems.

In addition to presentations and dialogue with the top national and international professionals in the EPS industry, this two-day workshop will include a visit to a local EPS site followed by breakout sessions designed to address real-world challenges.

The Consortium for ITS Training and Education (CITE), in conjunction
with the FHWA ITS Joint Program Office (JPO) Professional Capacity
Building (PCB) Program, have introduced a new web-based course on how to
develop and deploy systems while complying with Federal requirements for
use of a systems engineering process. This "Introduction to Systems
Engineering" course begins on September 23rd and is only $100 for the
instructor-led version. See the attached press release for more
information.

This session with provide an overview of SAFETEA-LU, the Safe,
Accountable, Flexible and Efficient Transportation Equity Act of 2003 A
Legacy for Users. Presenters will provide a big picture view on program
dollars, major programmatic changes, and related Operations/Intelligent
Transportation Systems provisions. In addition, a panel of
representatives from leading transportation associations will be
available to participate in a dialogue about the implications and
opportunities emerging from reauthorization as they related to State and
local governments, Transit, and the Planning Community.

The co-chairs of each standing committee should send to the entire Board, prior to the meeting, the draft document outlining the preliminary goals, roles and responsibilities for their committee (revised to reflect input from the Executive Committee last month, as needed).  We will be reviewing and approving these draft documents at this Board meeting.

Advanced Telecommunications (May 6, 2005 - June 13, 2005):

The overall goal of this course is to provide a system-level understanding of the operation of modern broadband transportation communications networks. This course focuses on how to plan and implement telecommunications networks to support a major Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) infrastructure. At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Identify the components of wide area networks associated with transportation systems, and recognize the breadth and variety of their requirements.
• Describe the steps followed in backbone plant underground and aerial construction processes.
• Recall the characteristics of fiber optic networks.
• Restate the differences between single mode and multimode fiber transmission.
• Discuss the concepts of multiplexing and concentration points.
• List the properties of the three categories of wireless transmission.
• Explain the role played by the FCC in spread spectrum communications, and which type of spectrum (licensed or unlicensed) can be used for different transmission links.
• Differentiate between the characteristics of OC-3 SONET and unlicensed Ethernet.

Discuss the functionality, communications requirements, planning considerations, and costs associated with several common ITS field applications such as TARs, traffic cameras and variable message signs.
(Length of course: approximately 8 hours)

Introduction to Telecommunications (April 1, 2005 - May 2, 2005): Telecommunications is the backbone of all ITS applications. It provides the means for sending data, voice, and video information between devices. This course is a primer on telecommunications for the ITS professional with little or no formal training in telecommunications. With so many ITS projects now requiring a telecommunications aspect, this course is a must for project managers. At the conclusion of this session the student should be able to:

• Describe the need for communications among and between advanced transportation management information systems components
• Provide a basic understanding of telecommunications terminology
• Present the fundamentals of voice, data, and video transmission.
  (Length of course: approximately 8 hours)

The two-day venue will begin with a tour of the Indianapolis Traffic Management Center and a reception on the 9th of February. The traditional ITS Midwest business meeting and project briefings will be held on February 10th. This meeting will examine statewide ITS issues and have one session on Commercial Vehicle Operations and another session on telematics and 511. The lunch speaker will be Robert Tally, Administrator, FHWA Indiana Division. See agenda.
