How to Write an Effective Research Statement

Whether you're a DOT practitioner, consultant or university researcher, it's always a challenge to find funding for needed research. The TRB Conduct of Research Committee has put together some resources for you to consider, beginning with a critical first step in obtaining funds: Writing an effective research statement...

In this Webinar you will hear practical guidance from a TRB senior program officer who has reviewed many a project statement - the good, the bad, and the ugly. You will also hear the perspectives of two successful proposers whose project statements were compelling enough to receive funding. Speakers will discuss topics that include: Coming up with a good title, convincing reviewers the research is critical, succinctly stating the objective, clearly and honestly identifying the benefits, and explaining how the results will be put to use. Discussion will be encouraged among presenters, and Webinar participants will have the opportunity to ask questions.
Presenters for this session include:
* Patrick Casey, CTC & Associates, Moderator. “Resources from the TRB Conduct of Research Committee”
* Christopher Hedges, TRB Senior Program Officer. “How to Write an Effective Research Statement”
* Randall Wade, Wisconsin Department of Transportation. “Relating Your Research Need to a Pressing National Issue”
*William R. “Randy” Cox, American Segmental Bridge Institute. “Working Through AASHTO to Meet DOT Needs”

Questions may be posed any time during the webinar, and will be answered at the end of the session. Registration: There is no fee for TRB Sponsors (see list of Sponsors). Others must pay $99 per site. Space is limited, so please register in advance.

Classroom Training

Fiber Optics for Traffic Systems

The Fiber Optics for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) course, presented by The Light Brigade is intended to provide a practical understanding of how fiber optics and fiber-optic technology are integrated into modern traffic systems. Fiber Optics for ITS Level I involves two days of classroom training covering fiber optic theory, installation, splicing, testing and maintenance disciplines, and system design. In addition, the course includes four chapters on video transmission, real-time video, traffic control systems, and next generation systems that are key to the evolution from analog to digital ITS applications. This includes optical multiplexing (WDM, CWDM), bi-directional transmission, and bandwidth considerations for those using or considering multimode fibers. Fiber Optics for ITS Level II involves two additional days of hands-on training on fiber optic splicing, cable preparation, OTDR operation, optical loss testing, and system design. Level I certification is required in order to be eligible for Level II certification.

The fee for the course is $700 for level I, $795 for level II, and $125 for certification (per level). See our brochure, or call (800) 451-7128 for details.

Advancing Traffic Signal Management Programs through Regional Collaboration

This T3 webinar will explore Regional Traffic Signal Management Programs from an intuitional and organizational perspective...

This T3 webinar will explore Regional Traffic Signal Management Programs from an intuitional and organizational perspective. Over the last decade, Regional Traffic Signal Management Programs have developed in many metropolitan areas with the primary objective of improving traffic signal timing. How successful have these programs been at achieving and sustaining this objective? What types of organizational structures, funding, and technology facilitate the operation of the system? There are many approaches to starting, organizing, and sustaining regional programs; a cross section of these, will be explored from the perspective of State DOTs, Metropolitan Planning Organizations and Local Agencies. The activities, funding sources and champions that sustain regional programs are as diverse as the regions themselves; exploring and discussing these is an important step in improving and advancing traffic signal operations nationally. The webinar will include brief presentations describing each regional traffic signal program followed by a Question & Answer discussion of questions submitted by webinar participants.
Audience:
Politicians, managers and practitioners interested in improving traffic signal management, operations and maintenance practices to reduce the impacts of traffic signals on climate change, improve the quality of life of customers and advancing a world class transportation system that interoperates across multiple modes and facilities.

IT and ITS have a common technical framework and similar technical challenges. As such, practitioners in both fields have much to gain by partnering together. The Oregon and New Hampshire State Departments of Transportation will present their experiences in bringing these different organizational groups together to promote efficient and successful ITS project deployment based on systems engineering principles. Each agency will share their successes, challenges, and lessons learned with the organizational and technical issues these new partnerships engender. Representatives from both agencies will discuss the ways that IT and ITS staff in program offices collaborate to support ITS deployments, making this an informative and interesting session and providing the audience with practical steps for initiating and maintaining collaborative, cross-departmental work partnerships. This webinar is part of a webinar series on Systems Engineering for ITS projects. Many agencies use their Information Technology group as a source for systems engineering and information technology skills and as a way to build competency across different agency departments.
Audience:
 * Individuals involved in planning, deploying, and operating ITS
 * ITS and IT staff and managers
 * Human Resource and workforce development professionals

CITE and FHWA Blended Courses - 2009

The Consortium for ITS Training and Education (CITE) eliminates the inconvenience of attending courses away from the office by providing "blended" courses through an interactive web-based format.

The fee for the course is $250 and students can register by going to the CITE web site. For more information, please contact Denise Twisdale, mztwiz@umd.edu or 301-403-4592.

The CITE and the FHWA Office of Safety have released the following interactive web-based courses.

      June - July 2009
Fundamentals of Database Management Systems  - Instructor-led, Web-based ("Blended") Version

Description: This course emphasizes the importance of database design, use, and management to ITS. The module begins with a general description of databases and database management systems, including the relationships that exist among a database, a DBMS, and an application. Relational database tables, Entity-Relationship Models, and the role of metadata are discussed in detail. Finally, the module describes SQL, and explores the role of databases in data warehousing and Geographic Information Systems.
Target Audience: Transportation professionals who are ultimately responsible for the design, procurement, and operations of transportation systems that rely heavily on database management systems. The course is not intended for individuals with extensive database backgrounds, nor is it intended for individuals seeking to learn the "mechanics" of using a particular database package.

Introduction to Systems Engineering  - Instructor-led, Web-based ("Blended") Version

Description: This course is an introduction to systems engineering for ITS project managers and project staff. It provides a high-level view of a broad and rich topic area, introducing basic concepts to individuals who are working on ITS projects. The goal is to allow these individuals to understand the benefits of applying systems engineering approaches as a means of developing quality systems. The course covers technical practices such as modeling, prototyping, trade-off analysis and testing, and management practices such as risk assessment and mitigation, which make up "best practices" in the systems engineering arena. This course is part of the core Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) curriculum established by the ITS Professional Capacity Building (PCB) program.
Target Audience: Transportation engineers and other practicing ITS professionals or technical persons at all levels of government and in the private sector. ITS project managers, technical team members, contractors, and staff are all appropriate participants. Project managers would particularly benefit from this course since they direct many peoples' efforts. Any level of professionals involved in ITS may attend to broaden their understanding of complex systems, beyond current technical knowledge.
